MedWaves is the UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). SCP is the combination of the implementation of tools and measures geared towards redesigning how goods and services are consumed and produced to drive industrial and socioeconomic development towards non-polluting, no-waste, low-carbon, resource-efficient, socially inclusive and circular economies. The Centre develops its activity under the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) for the protection and development of the Mediterranean basin, an organisation belonging to the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment). MedWaves has the mandate from the Barcelona and Stockholm Conventions to provide assistance to their Contracting Parties in fulfilling their commitments under those treaties, particularly through the support to the countries to shift to sustainable consumption and production patterns and circular economy. In doing so, MedWaves provides knowledge, training, advice and networking opportunities to governments, businesses, entrepreneurs, financial agents and civil society organizations to adopt eco-design and eco-innovation as strategic approaches to boost businesses competitiveness in the market. 🔥 We're currently at the Close-out Workshop for JUST2CE in Cape Town. Matías Ibáñez Sales, the Coordinator of Operations at MedWaves, delivered a presentation on what Just2CE entails. He then delved into an explanation of the current playing field, starting with the concept of the Linear Economy and contemporary capitalism, transitioning to the Circular Economy and its associated challenges. Matias emphasized JUST2CE's mission, pinpointing the shortcomings of the Circular Economy: - Thermodynamics - Pursuit of endless economic growth - Overemphasis on technology within the Circular Economy - Failure to address unfair social relations ✅ He highlighted the importance of questioning not just how we produce, but also why, for whom, and at what cost, underscoring that the Circular Economy is more than just a technical or apolitical discourse. Additionally, he touched upon concepts such as ecological economics, degrowth/post-growth models, social control over the economy, and democratic planning. ➡ Our colleague Katharina Gihring from African Circular Economy Network (ACEN) then discussed past workshops in South Africa and the resulting conclusions that have enriched the project. Key takeaways included Governance (aiming to decrease and eradicate corruption), Education (promoting inclusive, impactful, and Circular Economy-related education and capacity building), Research (focusing on roadmaps, strategies, and policies), and Engagement with communities and municipalities. Ben Purvis joined us online to introduce the Supply Chain Explorer tool and provided a brief tutorial for attendees to understand its functionality and experiment with it ✅ ⭕ These workshops are integral to the development of JUST2CE. [📢 EVENT] 2nd Annual MedProgramme Stocktaking Meeting 📌 This week, MedWaves attended the 2nd Annual MedProgramme Stocktaking Meeting in Podgorica, Montenegro, held from April 22nd to April 24th. The event gathered representatives from the Contracting Parties to the #BarcelonaConvention, MedProgramme’s implementing and executing agencies, representatives from the Global Environment Facility Secretariat, as well as relevant regional and global NGOs, bilateral and multilateral donors, and International Financing Institutions. 🗣 Representing MedWaves Jordi Moles, Project Manager in the Policy Area, and Hande Yükseler from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), jointly led a roundtable discussion ‘Invisible Threat: New POPs in Water’ focused on the challenges related to identifying and preventing new Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) as emerging pollutants in water systems.
