We are thrilled to announce that CENER 21, in partnership with the Ilidža Health Center, has been actively involved in a project focused on understanding the impact of the urban heat island effect on our community’s health. This project is being implemented with the support of the regional initiative SMART Balkan –  Civil Society for Shared Society in the Western Balkans, led by the Center for Civil Society Promotion (CPCD), the Center for Research and Policy Making (CRPM), and the Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM). Additionally, we are grateful for the financial support provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we conducted consultative meetings with the dedicated staff of the Ilidža Health Center. The objective was to identify the most effective approach for collecting data on the incidence of diseases associated with the urban heat island effect. These meetings provided valuable insights and knowledge-sharing opportunities for our medical experts.

In line with our commitment to accuracy and relevance, our medical professionals have meticulously recorded vital information related to climate change and health. By collecting this data, we aim to identify trends and measure the impact of climate change on public health in our community. This invaluable information will guide us in developing effective recommendations and strategies to protect the well-being of our residents.

In conjunction with data collection, we have initiated temperature measurements in both rural and urban areas of Ilidža over the past two months. These measurements have already revealed the presence of the urban heat island effect, emphasizing the importance of addressing this phenomenon in our region.

The findings from these activities will play a pivotal role in enhancing our understanding of climate change’s impact on public health. They will empower us to develop evidence-based interventions and strategies to foster a healthier and more resilient community.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Ilidža Health Center staff for their participation and dedication in advancing our knowledge of climate change’s effects on health. Together, we are paving the way for a healthier and sustainable future for our community.
